The study of substances and their effects
Since the time of Paracelsus (c. 1493–1541), it has been known that the effects of substances depend on the amount (or concentration) absorbed by the organism. Therefore, both qualitative information (which substance or substances?) and quantitative information (what amount or concentration?) must be available as a basis for toxicological assessment.
With expertise in toxicology and through the application of standardized toxicological methods, we are able to assess the harmful effects of chemical substances on organisms. A distinction is made between human toxicology and eco- or environmental toxicology. While human toxicology focuses on the effects on humans, ecotoxicology is concerned with describing the potential harmful effects of products or processes on the living environment. Ultimately, ecotoxicology also serves human health, as environmental damage can have repercussions for humans.
